S1 and S2

The department occupies 6 classrooms. Computers help us to offermore varied and appropriate teaching in what is a key subject inmodern life. Other technology such as the video and graphiccalculator are also in evidence in maths classrooms. An introductionto the graphic calculator now forms part of our S3 Credit course.

In S1/2 the emphasis is on the continuity of education fromprimary to secondary. To this end all classes work in ability groupsand the S1/2 course has been extensively revised in line with theGovernment's 5-14 arrangements in Mathematics. At present the S1/2course is based on School Mathematics Project / Maths in Action.Basic number skills, information handling and problem solvingactivities also form part of the course.

In S1/2 every pupil takes part in the Maths Challenge which isheld in the Atrium. The pupils work in teams to solve a variety ofmathematical problems. Extra incentive comes from trying to betterthe efforts of the staff team!
